Religious Freedom Essay
To define religious freedom is to support the freedom of an individual or a community to develop in their faith. As to those who continue to pursue their beliefs, we are often oblivious to how blessed we are to have freedom of religion. We should take pride of what religion we believe in and not take it for granted. Around the world, there are people who don’t have the opportunity to believe in their own religion. As people of faith, we should open our eyes to find ways for equality in not only religion, but for everything that is right.
Freedom of religion is of importance because we are closer as a community and continue to spread peace. The first amendment states that citizens have a right to not only speech, assembly, press, but freedom to exercise in any religion of desire. So much conflict, war, and negative energy is spread due to those who constantly fight for this right. When we practice different religions, it affects how we live on a daily basis. These different religions have many diverse rituals and that, in my opinion, is what makes it unique.
Religious freedom is very beneficial to the community because we are not ashamed to embrace our religion and be proud. I believe that it is a sin for others to have false beliefs if we are forced because God gave all of us free will. The numbers of conflict will be decreased if we are satisfied with the religion we have chosen to believe in. Religion is taught for us to only spread love and the word of God, not battle everyone else because we don’t think that they are practicing the correct religion.
In conclusion, religious freedom is a way to spread positivity everywhere respect the way others live. We should acknowledge that there are those who cannot simply have their own religion. We should take advantage of our rights and hope that soon there is equality throughout the world. A quote that I find amusing, while easy to follow is stated as, “ Religion is like a pair of shoes. Find one that fits for you, but don’t make me wear your shoes.”

The Forbidden Schoolhouse Letter
Dear “Powerful” men of Canterbury, February 24
It has come to my concern that you do not like certain scholars that I have enrolled. I find it quite baffling that you think that African Americans have no right to have an education. You think that they have no right to learn, so instead you want them to be uneducated. I object to this statement because all people are capable of learning and turning into powerful leaders like yourself. I do not appreciate that you put me in jail until our scheduled trial date. Every single day I become more and more confused as to why you accuse such innocent people. We are only trying to benefit all to become a stronger society. I put all of my heart and soul to try to be equal, but you and your people have pushed me down. I came back with my head held up higher and higher, determined to beat you at your own game. I suggest that you look from other’s point of views besides your own. This town was very difficult to work with, and I thought I could change it with some hard work. In the end, I decided that this hateful town does not deserve my help and you can suffer on your own. Your dreams have finally come true, and I surrender.
Sincerely,
Ms.Prudence Crandall

Black History Poem: Louis Armstrong
Born Louis Armstrong call me Sathchmo or Pops
I play the trumpet, cornet, and sing non-stop
Looking for jobs left and right
from selling newspapers
to singing jazz late at night
New Orleans, Louisiana, what a rough town
Born in poverty, a poor neighborhood
But livin’ in the “Battlefield” never brought me down
Summer of 22, second cornet was my first gig
Working on new music you would really dig
The Hot 5 was created, but soon broke apart
There were harsh review, had a rough voice, it was a sign for a new start
Made it in the movies and wrote a book
You should read Pennies from Heaven, or Swing that music, so go have a look
Civil rights was a struggle, but Armstrong said what was right
It was the bravest, most definitive moments of his life
This is me, the only... Louie

Dear Editor,
Every child that is born into this world has a purpose. Even if your child has disabilities, that means that you have to love them even more that you did before. You are clueless as to what these children are capable of doing in the future. They might have had great potential, therefore it is a loss of God’s creation. God created us in his own image and abortion is disobeying him.
Children with disabilities are not perfect, but in reality, who really is? One day, they may turn into great leaders because they have such great potential and attitude. Being disabled is one thing that causes them to be made fun of. Why constantly bring them down when we can just make it a stronger community? We may see these children as failed experiments in mutation, but they are regular people with one, tiny flaw.
We can do so many things to help end abortion. For example, we can have a speaker at schools to teach not just only young women, but males about why abortion is such a horrid decision to make. When you kill an unborn child, it feels similar to breaking a law. We murder an innocent child that was created in God’s perfect image. Even if that individual is not Catholic, we are committing some sort of crime. We can gather a group of people to inform others who are not aware, or ignorant to this cause. These words of wisdom that we share should inspire others to take a stand.
Not only children with disabilities, but all of us have a special task to complete in our lifetime. Being thin and beautiful isn’t what makes us “special” in this world. Being you on the inside and out is what counts to be special. God created us in his own image, so he has a plan for each and every one of us. Everyone is set out to accomplish great things, and disabled children are just as capable. We are all beautiful in our own way and that’s what makes us unique. Once people realize this, we can contribute to stop ending innocent lives.

Patsy Takemoto Mink
Born December 6, 1927
lived and grew up on the Maui Island
Won valedictorian at her high school
Became the first female student body president
& that was pretty cool.
After the bombing at Pearl Harbor,
her daddy was taken away.
He came back from interrogation
and was there to stay.
Went to study about medicine in a university,
Until she got interested in law
to fight for diversity.
First Asian-American elected for Congress
There were many things she wanted to accomplish.
She fought for women’s rights and education
Founded the Oahu Young Democrats
& started her own mini nation.
Group of Liberal Democrats wanted her to run for president
Since she was a female Japanese-American,
She was a little hesitant.
Patsy was the second to the last in the Oregon May Primary
Although she lost, only having two percent of votes
She still wanted to fight for equality
Patsy served in Congress for many more terms
Although she died by pneumonia,
Her legacy is left with so much to learn.

Do you think people like Crooks and Lennie are treated the same way in today’s society as they were in the novel? Do you think that Lennie would have suffered the same consequences in today’s world?
In today’s world, we have a more open mind about acceptance. Time has changed drastically from the Great Depression. We live in a world where we try to do what is right for the community. Just because people are different, we don’t use any derogatory comments or ostracize colored people. Everyone is different and unique in their own ways. We don’t have the impulse to call people stupid, but we take a moment to think before we say anything.
As for Crooks, it would not matter what the color of his skin is. We are all equal and we intend to keep it that way. Crooks would have been able to have his own land, start a business, or do whatever he desires. Crooks did not do anything to harm anyone, but simply wanted to live on his farm. In today’s world, everything is so diverse. We do not judge people by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character. Like I have said before, Crooks is generally a lonely guy, and all he wants is some companions. It does not take much to ask how someone’s day is, or what book they are reading.
Lennie would not have to suffer the same consequences as he did in the novel. Today, George would have been arrested for killing a man. People with disabilities are capable of the same things regular people are. Lennie would have been treated better today due to the fact that we are more compassionate. Typically, Lennie might be sent to a hospital or go to therapy, but otherwise, he is completely fine. Lennie does not have the right state of mind, but he does not have any bad intentions. Lennie has a fun and loving personality that people today would admire.

Think about what it means to care for someone. Do you think George’s decision to shoot Lennie showed that he cared for him? What predictions can you make about George’s future? How will he feel about his decision in five years?
To care for someone you go out of your way to make sure the other person is okay. No matter the situation, helping the other person is your number one priority. You will still love them unconditionally even if problems are caused. In rough times, you do your best to give that person advice or alleviate their pain. It takes a lot of effort to care for someone, but it shows that you are a true friend.
George’s decision to shoot Lennie did show that he cared for him. This is because George did not want to see Lennie getting made fun of, or getting into trouble. When George killed Lennie, he was in shock. His hand shook nervously and he kept looking at the hand used to kill his best friend. At the time, it may have seemed like it was only to benefit George. He did it because Lennie was being treated differently and George wanted his suffering to end. Lennie could now live his dream of tending rabbits in the sky.
In George’s future, I could see great things coming for him. It might take a while to recover from Lennie’s death. In the future, I could see George and the other guys from the bunkhouse quit their current jobs to buy land. They would start a small farm together and have a diverse set of animals. On occasion, there might be a few bumps in the road, but it will be fixed. In five years, George will still miss Lennie. He probably wishes that Lennie were still there to witness great thing they will come across. There might be some guilt inside of him, but it was only for Lennie’s benefit.
Many people in the novel suffer from disappointment. Choose any three of the following characters and discuss what reasons they have t be disappointed about their lives: Crooks, Curley, George, Candy, and Curley’s wife.
In their lives, Crooks definitely has a reason to be disappointed. Obviously, since it is not the modern day, equality is not a relevant term to society in the 1920’s. Crooks used to be able to roam free on his own property, but that privilege was taken away because of the color of his skin. He is not treated with any respect and has to be kept away in the barn. Inside of the barn, he sleeps on a stack of hay next to manure. He has been called inappropriate names and does not have the opportunity do anything he might enjoy. He is a very lonely guy in general, because he bottles every single emotion up, waiting to explode.
George is another character to be disappointed because he is stuck with Lennie. George did care about Lennie very much, but Lennie was preventing him from accomplishing his dreams. An example from the novel would be when Lennie was imagining Aunt Clara telling him he was wasting George’s time. George could be fulfilling his dreams instead of traveling everywhere to escape Lennie’s problems. George is restless with sore eyes watching his every move to not cause any trouble. Lennie cannot help it, but in a way he takes George for granted. All he is concerned about is tending the rabbits and not caring if George is affected by his decisions.
Curley’s wife had a life from high hopes, to lost dreams and disappointment. On the ranch, she is seen as the girl who has the “eye” for every guy working there. Since she is the only female on the farm, there is no respect given to her. She felt that she had to settle for Curley because she had no other choice. Curley’s wife did not truly love Curley and did not want to commit. She had no other choice because the thought of her mother crushing her dreams was unbearable. Curley’s wife really thought she had talent and make it in the big screens, but she has the rest of her life to live in disappointment.
The Fault in Our Stars Reading Project
When you read The Fault in Our Stars, it is not like any other typical love story. It’s a love story, but it a very unique one. Sixteen year old, Hazel Grace Lancaster has stage four Thyroid cancer. It is not easy for her to breathe, so it is mandatory for her to wear a nasal cannula. She is usually a quiet and depressed person, but she can be spontaneous at times with her big, brown eyes. This unhappy teen is forced to go to a support group called ‘The Literal Heart of Jesus.’
Hazel Grace has been going to the support group for a couple of weeks, but just on one of those days, she meets a seventeen year old boy, Augustus Waters. Hazel describes him as an attractive, tall guy with beautiful blue eyes and mahogany hair. Augustus denies that he has cancer, but he goes to the support group to be there for his best friend, Isaac.
Hazel has a sudden interest in him, and so does he. After many long talks, watching movies together, and playing video games, it doesn’t take long to convince Augustus that he is in love with Hazel. He loves her so much that he travels to Amsterdam with Hazel to meet an author that disappoints them. “ I’m in love with you, and I know that love is just a shout into the void, and that oblivion is inevitable, and I am in love with you.” -Augustus Waters
It doesn’t take long for both the readers and Hazel to fall in love with Gus, because he is so charming. When we learn to love him the most, there is a sudden twist. Our beloved character passes away. There is an emptiness in our hearts that Augustus filled. Sick people can survive in life normally, they can find love. The Fault in Our Stars is one of the most extraordinary love stories that I’ve ever read.
